For example, we worked alongside an engineering company whose order book was dominated by customers who wanted work completed on a PDQ basis, at the narrowest of margins and with unreasonable payment terms.
We recommended modest prices increases; reduced payment terms; a nominal rate of interest for late payers; a punitive rate for bad debt and discounts on early payments. Despite the reservations of the company’s board, the modest price increases were tolerated by the worthy customers, the least profitable customers melted away and credit control improved dramatically, meaning that there was no need for expensive bank finance.
